Team 1, consisting of Dave Soper, Aubrie Soper, Beth McCormick, and Sheila Scheib all left Haiti on Friday morning at 9 am. They all arrived safe and sound later last evening in their home towns. Steve Scheib stays behind to buy wood and plumbing material in Port au Prince for the school in Dessalines. Team 2 flys in on Saturday at 4:30 pm and will travel to EGO that night. Much was accomplished by Team 1. Beth spent parts of 3 days at the local hospital working along Haitian staff. Two other days were spent working at the medical clinic at EGO, which sees alot of people who live in the mountains of Haiti. Aubrey spent a whole day attending class with friends at the new school at EGO. The Spanish teacher is fluent in 4 languages and used Aubrie as an example of correct grammar. She was in tears as we departed the orphanage yesterday. Sheila worked with Doris Peavey to bring the books and records up to date. Much time was spent planning out needs for adoptions, paperwork for school children, and government record updates that are required of all orphanages in Haiti. Plus, their bond is 2nd to none, so for Sheila to spend time with Doris is like spending time with her mentor and mother in life. Dave Soper was busy wiring building, installing and updating plumbing and fixing many broken pieces of equipment. A man with a big, big heart, Dave is an encouragement to everyone around him.
Many relationships were established for the new team members the last 10 days. I'm sure that most of those will continue to blossom and grow. Beth commented to me one evening, 'I really don't want to leave here' and with that said, Aubrie was in agreement. To be honest with you regarding Beth and Aubrie, I have never seen anyone bond more closely with the children at EGO in all my years of working there. They literally spent every waking hour with the kids their age, singing, playing basketball, telling stories, learning each others languages and customs, and sharing about their experiences with their Savior and Lord.
For Dave Soper, it was a re-kindling of some strong bonds that will never go away. Two children have become very close to Dave, and he spent many hours with them. Dave is a precious brother who never says No to anyone. He has the softest and most giving heart of anyone I have ever met. My only problem with Dave is this: he really doesn't like Haitian Rice & Beans, and the Goat Meat that goes over it. Other than that, he will eat anything you put in front of him, as long as it's meat (American) and potatoes! Ha Ha Dave!
Sheila is amazing to me. I have been married to this girl since February 21, 1976 and by the way, we have another anniversary coming up, which I will again miss for the ? time. She is a gentle person with wisdom that compliements everyone around her. She knows what to say and what not to say. If only her husband would learn to listen more and talk less, he would be a better man. I echo that. You hear that Steve?
Anyways, posted below are some photos. Later on, when I return to the states, I will post all 900+ on our Haiti Work Teams Shutterfly site. Please continue to pray for the next team arriving today and its leaders, Lamar Graft and Bob Streeper. Steve
